Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club

Beautiful isn't it?

the secret is out – I have put in a bid to buy the Peterborough Lawn Bowling club… I always said I didn’t want a cafe – but… I heard they were going to tear down this historic building to make room for more parking (shaking my head) so I stepped up to the plate. The neighbourhood is against tearing it down – they want to see the building stay – it needs a lot of repairing – but I’m up to the challenge. Sadly they turned down my offer – citing that they didn’t like the idea of competition for their 2.1 million dollar free building donated by our government. Seems a little greedy to me… but.. Peterborough city council has called a meeting June 7th at city hall – 7 pm to discuss the matter. Wish me luck. I sure hope we don’t end up with a parking lot where this grand beautiful building now stands. If you have an opinion on the matter – let council know –

    after the meeting –
Council seemed torn – some members were all for saving the building – others support the rights of the land owner to do what they want with their property – seems both answers are right. Seems a shame to destroy such a nice building – especially if it can be used – the alternative?

“pave paradise and put up a parking lot?” (thanks Tami)

    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
    And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Till it’s gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    They took all the trees
Put ’em in a tree museum
    And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Till it’s gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    Hey farmer farmer
    Put away the D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
    Please!
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Till it’s gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    Late last night
I heard my screen door slam
    And a big yellow taxi
    Took away my old man
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Till it’s gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
    Till it’s gone
    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

    BIG YELLOW TAXI –

    To Peterborough City Council:
It makes me sick to think of a beautiful building like the bowling club, being torn down for unneccessary parking. Why do we need this extra parking lot? There is adequate parking at Fleming College and the empty lot beside it. Part of the neighbourhood charm is the buildings that fill it. Please don’t allow the demolition to happen.

well – I just read another article in the Examiner… this time interviewing the property manager. It’s amazing how twisted the facts become. Yes – I wanted the building for June 30th… because the property manager repeatedy announced how bad the building is – I offered them FREE rent until their building closed presumably for 4 months (that part wasn’t in the article) because I wanted to get to the repairs immediately, before any further damage is done. (also not in the article). They say it’s worth much more – yet, it should be condemned -(just not until their building is finished) he talks about mould – there is 1 small spot. He blames the lack of enrollment into the club on the 1 season clubhouse – even if the clubhouse were 4 season, you can’t lawnbowl on snow. Perhaps, people in Peterborough just aren’t lawnbowlers.

The nasty horrible truth is, I was just trying to save a building – I was actually lead to believe that THEY wanted to save the building, I didn’t know they would play games like this. I offered a low price because the manager kept going on about all of the problems I could expect, so after getting 2 professional contractors estimates, I reflected worst case scenario into my offer. If my offer was so horrible – why didn’t they counter offer?

Facts are facts – 9 people looked at the building – no one other than me was interested in working with them.

Oh – and by the way – it’s 10 parking spots – not 20 – it would have been 12, but I offered to put in a right of way – so their trucks could easily access the greens for lawn cutting. I never once said that they couldn’t use the parking lot, in fact, I expected it. AND I never once said I was selling sandwiches (I offered them free until their club was built since I wanted to use the kitchen ) … I said I MAY do some desserts – (rolling eyes)

I wonder how they would be acting if they didn’t have a free building on the horizon?

I also wonder about why the reporter would deliberately try to create controversy. I also wonder about why a newspaper would not interview everyone involved. I sure hope the intelligent public reads between the lines. Perhaps I will take my money elsewhere to open a roasting house. Sadly, I don’t think this building was ever for sale… and I don’t think there’s anything anyone can do about it.
